The court and markings (Rule 2-1)

See Rule 2-1-4 A continuous line, 2 inches (5 centimeters) wide, parallel to and equidistant from the end lines, shall separate the court into two playing areas.
NOTE: A shadow-bordered 2-inch (5 cm) wide line is permissible.

The Center Line must be marked -  The center line must be marked with a line  as stated in the rule book.  The match cannot take place without the proper court markings.    The Center line is the concern as this is a safety issue as a specific rule is applied (see 9-5-7) with crossing that line.   SCVOA:  If the school refuses to tape the floor – Suspend the match!

Both the CIF SS and the LA City Sections are concerned about the correct padding, covering of equipment, so it is important to address all padding and safety concerns prior to warm-ups!  Liability begins from the time the officials arrive within the visual confines of the playing area.

Only the Commissioner of the Section can determine/rule on the status of a contest. The official suspends the match until the problem is resolved.

Southern Section Procedure: READ HERE

The official suspends the match until the problem is resolved.  If the team does NOT WANT to comply, then the SS Office should be called.

LA City Section Procedure: READ HERE

If the center line is not marked over a logo the game will be played. Please ask the coach to tape the floor so there is a continuous center line. Do NOT forfeit the match or cancel the match. Please notify the Section office by 8:00am the following morning if the coaches refuses to tape the line.

2017-18

CENTER LINE: The center line can be a solid OR shadowed line – this remains the same as last season. If part of the line is missing, ask the coach to tape the missing line. In this case, safety is an issue.

It is required that all padding & covering meet the specifications in the current NFHS Rule/Case Books. Any concerns must be addressed prior to the start of the warm-up period. If a playing area cannot be made legal, then that match may not be held. (Padding/covering equipment properly or center line is not marked clearly & the school does not want to tape it)

However, only the CIF Section Office Commissioner or their Representative may cancel a match. Contact the CIF Section Office as soon as it has been determined that the condition is unsafe/illegal for play.

CHANGE (NFHS Rule Book – page 10 Rule 2-1-5) (Casebook – page 4 Part 1 – Situation 1)

The ATTACK LINES on each side of the court must be SOLID, beginning in the 2017/18. (the word solid was not in the rule book last year.

PROCEDURE: If the line is not solid, ask the coach to tape the ATTACK lines. Officials should not tape lines. And even though the book says one color, if they use white athletic tape that will be acceptable.

  • CIF Southern Section policy per Mike Middlebrook - If the official could not see the line then the coach would need to tape it off.  If the official can see it then proceed with the game and report it afterwards. Send an email to Joanne Venditto, SCVOA CIF Liaison jvenditto22@gmail.com and your Unit President.

  • CIF LA City Section policyper Myra Einberg, City Section Liaison - Ask the coach to tape the floor – if they refuse, play the game, fill out an Incident Report on the LA City Section website. Contact Myra Einberg via email memyline@aol.com and cc your Unit President.
