To promote the sport and encourage continuity of play” volleyball rules are different for different levels of play. As the sport evolves and adopts specific rules are modified each year.  All references to volleyball rules on this web site are based upon the official National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Volleyball Rules Book for 2017-2018.

"To maintain the sound traditions fo this sport, encourage sportsmanship and minimize the inherent risk of injury, the National Federation of State High School Associations writes playing rules for varsity competition among student-athletes of high school age. Member associations of the NFHS independently make decisions regarding compliance with or modification of these playing rules for student-athletes in their respective states." (from NFHS Rules Book). 

California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) interpretations and modifications to NFHS rules are noted in the rule references and included on this site.

Where it has been determined to be beneficial, Southern California Volleyball Officials' Association (SCVOA) have published rule clarifications, with many examples, in the appropriate area of rule clarifications section of the site.
